June 2002 Chapter 168 meeting in Sydney in Doug
Minty's workshop. Theme:- ugly clocks. But firstly Lindsay Bramall
presented this mystery clock to challenge the group. |
A JUF? Has all the hallmarks of Plate 1146 in
10th edition Terwillinger 400 day Clock repair guide, but with
a W instead of a G botom left. |
Lindsay points out to Richard Faudry who is thinking
- so what is the mystery? |
Compared with another JahreshurenFabrik, it is
well made |
It has a lovely 2"dial, but, hello - what's
that under the dial? |
If you look closely, you can see a B inside a
crescent moon! A Badische? Surely not. How can this be? |
Second mystery with made in Germany on the back
plate - an easy one this, another JUF - but the pendulum looks
unusual. |
It's a fat dumpy thing, looks like it is machined
from the solid |
Closer inspection without the gallery reveals
a line around the bottom and some packing inside. A nice clock. |
Now we come to the Ugly clocks. This is a J Link
zodiac style dial |
The back reveals engraved wings on top of the
"watch size" 1.77" plates to make it look like
a full plate movement. |
Hey! with the brass shinied up this will actually
be a stunning clock. |
Koma 1951 with copper art deco dial |
It's not ugly is it? |
Full plate with all its gear, quite a nice clock |
Kevin Hession recons these late chrome exaamples
are a bit ugly |
Linday demonstrates some which the group had mixed
feelings as to whether they were really ugly or not - no agreement
and heated debate |
Now this is ugly! Who would think of putting a
400 day in a Napoleon hat clock. I fact without the wings it
looks a little bit better |
Back to ugly. |
Oh Ho, maybe this is the ugliest |
a 400 day sitting on a chamber pot - pooo! |
Don't knock it says Carla, I think this is a most
beautiful clock with a Limoge base - I'd like to take this one
home - Can I? No says the owner, I can't bear to part with such
ugliness. |
