May 2003 Workshop was on clock and watch evaluation, 27 members
attended. Doug Minty, Michael Smith, Lindsay Bramall and
Phillippe Mesnage presented the group
with advice on evaluation and valuing clocks
and watches. A really informative day of great assistance
to the members, especially the advice of the many pitfalls one
can fall into when evaluating clocks and trying to assess their
value, especially when you are considering purchasing an item -
caveat emptor! |

We were split into groups and given clocks to
evaluate, report on what we found and what was it's value |

This is a German bracket clock by Winterhalder &
Hofmeier Sch |
.JPG) |
How was this determined? - by markings on the
backplate and reference to books |
.JPG) |
We made use of the books in
our library - Allix for carriage
clocks as an example |
.JPG) |
How do you asses and value a 400 day clock? This
one has a cracked base, looks pretty ordinary, but is quite
unusual because it has a calendar |
.JPG) |
This is a repeating carriage clock in unrestored
state, quite attractive. What's it worth
fixed up? |
.JPG) |
A nice looking French Cartel clock - is it
right? Japy Freres et Cie count wheel movement ?1880 |
.JPG) |
Doesn't fit with the case which could be C 1910. We
considered this a marriage and a "decorator" clock |
.JPG) |
This says Made in France on the dial and has an
American style visible escapement |
.JPG) |
Alan checks out this Astral
dial movement |
.JPG) |
Phillippe gave us a talk on French clocks and
this one is definitely not. Perhaps a crude Indian or
Asian copy of a 4 glass regulator |
.JPG) |
Again, is this what if seems? No, it's
not an Ansonia Habana but a Japanese copy of similar vintage.
How does this affect a
valuation? |
.JPG) |
An attractive German made case with time and
strike movement |
.JPG) |
However it has a replacement
English movement another marriage - how
does this affect value? |
.JPG) |
C 1830 brass French clock - very attractive.
Dial redone |
.JPG) |
On closer inspectio however reveals that the
front of the case has been swapped for the back - tell tale
screw holes |
.JPG) |
An Emu Egg clock and French marble, how do you
value? |
.JPG) |
The name and numbers on the clock have been gone
over with texta, hmmm, what does this do to value? |
.JPG) |
A miniature banjo, 20th C with offset winding
hole |
.JPG) |
A restored Seth Thomas NSW Railway clock
- repainted dial. What's it worth Ray? |
.JPG) |
Close up of the American banjo with
pictures of Mount Vernon |
.JPG) |
An original
Ansonia Swinger - many swinger Reproductions are coming
onto the market, how does this affect valuations - does
it put buyers off? |
.JPG) |
Ship's Chronometers are a specialised field and
have a big range in age and value |
.JPG) |
Doesn't look right an
Austrian 30 hour movement
in a made up ugly case? Does nothing for
Noel. |
.JPG) |
This is a German Chronometer, which would get a
higher price in Germany than Australia |
.JPG) |
This is another German clock with an Australian
theme |
.JPG) |
We also covered Watches, both pocket and wrist |
