The June meeting had several unusual clocks which were discussed with
the group in an active learning session. The workshop covered
escapement geometry and design, an essential study to help in the repair and
problem solving in the operation of these clocks. Poorly
adjusted escapements are of course only part of the story if a 400 day
clock fails to run properly, all other components have to be correct also -
lubrication, pivots, pivot holes, springs etc. These meetings serve to
have a hands on discussion of these issues. Click on the

An unusual 4 glass "patented dial: clock C1884 with
Breguet type gilt hands. There are 3 sizes of patented dials, from the
small one on the glass dome type to this one which is mid sized and the wall
clock version. |
Doug Minty inspects an unusual pendulum, built for temperature compensation,
but ineffective. This one is silver plated, by JUF and is number 27 in
the Guide |

An unusual Grivolas on wooden base and columns, hardly up the usual standard
for this maker, but authentic. Lovely dial, lots of information on the
backplate |

Clock attributed to Phillipp Haas according to the Guide but may be by Hauk.
Notable features are the lack of finials on the columns and the very narrow
gallery on the disc pendulum |

Kienzle with mercury temperature compensating pendulum. The "Kaiser
Bill" finials on top of the columns give this version an interesting look.'
as does the bell shaped suspension guard |

The workshop for the evening covered the operation and adjustment of the
Graham dead beat escapement and the pin pallet escapement. The
Keininger and Oberfell (Kundo) clock above which had one of the worst
butchered eccentric was used as an example of what not to do. Although
the clock ran, poor drop and adjustment resulted in poor transmission of
power to the pendulum. We reviewed the advice in Terwillinger's
Guide as well as Chris Wadge's new book on 400 day clocks for the exercise. |
Lindsay Bramall discussed the construction techniques for his latest
